Animating the night :: Film night Research = fun!
I am hoping to have an ames c.art stop animation movie night soon. We have this big fancy flat screen that I can plug my computer into, why not use it for streaming some select stop animation shorts from youtube. If anything, my plans to do so have given me a great excuse to sift through many animations.
My all time favorite weaving story is the Crane Wife. I first was introduced to it in college when we watched a series of Russian stop animations films based on japanese folk tales. You can see it here:
I love this animation about a little girl, her cat, and how they try to save a fish and then, well, just watch and see what happens. I so relate to this little girl and her adventures with her cat + her nightmares about something fairly ordinary and it seeming so scary. Craft Cat and I? I think so.
And this artist was introduced to me by my drawing professor. His name is William Kentridge and he works completely with charcoal on paper. The erasing marks and previous drawings build up on each other to continue the narrative of the animation.
Christina and I met up today for our weekly painting/drawing and decided to sit outside and work with charcoal. We did a few sketches – landscape and trees and feet and hands. I’ll take pictures and post them tomorrow.
See you then!
Kristin
